What We Believe…

“In a quality arts education program, learning happens along two broad and parallel avenues…  Education IN the arts offers those rewards that are inherent in creating and studying works of art themselves.  Education THROUGH the arts produces those outcomes that are related to learning in other fields.”

            - Getty Education Institute for the Arts

Buckner Teaching the Arts Performing School

The performing arts teachers – with the classroom teachers – strive to create and implement a cohesive, exciting, integrated arts program.

Dance

Dance is a very important part of the arts.  It was the first art form created in primitive

times, and it is still very important today.

Buckner is very special because we are the only Arts School to include dance in our curriculum.  Each child has dance class once a week and I require all students to participate.

Dance builds discipline, flexibility and strength.  We work on many forms of dance including ballet, jazz, modern, ballroom and tap.

For class, the students are required to wear black sweat pants or black jazz pants.  They may wear a plain white T-shirt for class or a white turtleneck shirt when it is colder.  They must have black dance shoes. The dress code will be strictly enforced!  Parents will be notified if their child does not wear the proper attire.  The child will be given two warnings.

I am very excited to be back dancing and I can’t wait to teach your children the new things I have learned!

Art

“I found that I could say things with color and shapes that I had no words for.”

                                            -      Georgia O’Keefe

Art is a necessary component for the developmental growth of every child.  The art program at Buckner is a sequential, standards-based, developmental course of study.  It is structured to introduce basic design elements and principles and develop skill in their expressive use.  Creative art experiences provide opportunities for students to connect classroom learning with individual expression.  Through art production, students will experience a variety of media, techniques, and processes.  They will examine a wide range of subject matter, symbols and ideas.  Students will also explore how art and artists have reflected the unique history and cultures of people around the world.  Through art, an atmosphere of higher level thinking skills will be encouraged and practiced.

Music

“Music training is a more potent instrument than any other, because rhythm and harmony find their way into the inward places of the soul.”

                                                - Plato

Music education is a vital part of educating the whole child.  One of the beneficial things about music is that it is multi-sensory.  Music can be heard, seen, spoken, sung, played and moved to.  Music is highly stimulating to the brain, exercises it, and can even cause new pathways to be developed in the brain.

In music class this year, your student will be engaged in lessons that involve singing, playing, moving, listening, analyzing, creating and improvising.  Students will actively participate in the music making process and will develop music literacy skills, which research shows is directly connected to reading skills in children.  We will also be exploring the close connection between math and music, studying history and science through music, and learning music from other cultures.

We are looking forward to the school year and instilling a love of music in your student as the arts are what make us human.

Drama

Through a variety of DRAMA activities, students are given many opportunities to  perceive, imagine, communicate, and respond  to sensory stimuli by using their mind, feelings, body and voice.  Movement, pantomime, improvisation, character analysis, dramatizations, role play, puppetry, play-making and play writing are a few of the areas of development explored as we integrate Drama with the core curriculum.

Much time is spent on story elements such as plot, character, setting, theme, conflict, and resolution.  Students will demonstrate responsibility and self-confidence as well as cooperation with others as they begin to develop and communicate an awareness of self and society through Drama.

In addition to their weekly Drama time, students in grades 1-5 will also attend one session a week of Reader’s Theater as part of their Reading Enrichment.  It is an exciting, highly motivational way to have success in Reading.  It encourages strong oral skills, allows students to explore literature in a new form... and, it’s lots of fun!

Physical Education

I am excited about having another fantastic year here at Buckner Performing Arts School!

The students, parents, and staff are awesome and I look forward to another busy, active year! I will be teaching the students the importance or exercise as well as many sports skills.  I will also be choreographing and teaching dances and performance numbers for programs and assemblies.  A healthy body is essential for a healthy, alert mind.

Your student will have PE on the same days every week. Please have children dress appropriately for movement.  Studies show that more and more children are becoming overweight every year.  We have to work together and find time to get that important exercise.  Encourage your children to walk or run laps at noon recess and regular recess with our fitness club.  This is a great way to condition your heart and burn fat!

Please keep these things in mind on PE day!

¨        Flat rubber soled shoes that cover the whole foot are the safest and most favorable for PE.

¨        Dresses can hinder movement for some activities.

¨        Please bring a parent or doctor note if your child cannot participate in PE for some reason.

¨        Try to exercise with your children at least two or three times a week.

Please check the note sent out with the PE information to know what days your child has PE, and needs to wear appropriate shoes and clothes.  Thank You!
