HOMEWORK FACT SHEET

District Homework Procedures—June 2009

Background

Homework is a valuable tool in the learning process. Used appropriately, it can provide practice and reinforcement for previous instruction, provided opportunity to develop pupil responsibility, and involve parents more directly in supporting the learning process. For these reasons, pupils shall be given regular and appropriate homework activities in all grades. Homework shall be assigned with consideration of the maturity level of the pupil, the organization of the school and other activities in which the pupil might be involved.

Below we speak to each level and address the following:

1. General Philosophy/Expectations of Homework

2. How expectations are communicated to parents

3. Strategies to ensure Homework is meaningful

4. Availability of textbooks and other resources.

1. Homework is assigned as practice or reinforcement of existing concepts and is tied to district curriculum standards. General guidelines for the amount increase by grade level. Example: 10 minutes K-1, 20 minutes Gr. 2-3 and 30 minutes Gr. 4-5. Expectations for each school vary by magnet theme and organization of school.

2. A variety of means are used to communicate with parents. Student Handbook, Back to school nights, Student Agendas, Classroom and School Newsletters.

3. Making sure students understand what is expected from the homework assignment is key. Since it is practice and not new material, it is normally easier work and students will be given background knowledge prior to taking it home. Communicating expectations to parents is important and done via student agenda or individual note.

4. We expect all students to be provided with the appropriate resources to do their homework. This includes being able to take home materials, including textbooks if necessary. We do not have textbooks for writing or spelling but utilized resource materials designed by the district.

Buckner School Song

Verse:

Everyone is welcome here

It's a place to be accepted.

Smiling faces fill the hall

We are ready to have fun!

Through Dance, Drama, Music, Art

We're learning and creating.

We all do our part

Success is everywhere!

Chorus:

Oh, Buckner is a joyful celebration

Of who we are and who we want to be.

Oh, Buckner is believing in each other.

Join our song,

We're a happy family.
